MCRWD now reads all meters monthly for you, around the 20th of each month. If you wish to know what your meter reads at any given day, you may complete these steps. If you are not comfortable completing these steps, please call the office, and we will be happy to do it for you.
STEP 1 Locate your meter pit on your property. The actual meter is housed underground in the pit and topped with a metal lid marked "water". Remove the lid by using a tool, such as large channellocks. Be sure to put the lid back on the meter pit. DO NOT leave this lid off.
STEP 2 Once you open the meter pit, lift the inner frost lid. Again, this must be replaced when done. On the face of the meter, there is a large dial and a display of numbers. For the residential meter, each rotation of the dial measures 10 gallons. Read the number display from left to right. Be sure to include the stationary zeros. This is your meter reading. Meters measure water in gallons. Your meter reading used is in the thousand gallons on your bill, and the hundreds are carried over month to month. Compare that reading to what your bill states as your current or present reading.
STEP 3 Keep in mind that you might be checking your meter on a date or time different from the one used for billing. This could result in a difference in the amount you find, compared with the amount on your bill. However, if your reading is considerably higher than what is on your bill, check for a leak or try to determine the source of the large water usage. If your reading is significantly lower than the reading on your bill, please contact us and let us assist you in determining the problem. Your meter base may be broken.
